How to Install Windows 7 From Your Internal Hard Drive
Purpose
Some older computers have trouble installing Windows from the thumb drive. If all you have is a USB Windows 7 Installer then you can use this method to accomplish your clean install of Windows 7.
Solution
Preparing Hard Drive
- With the computer powered completely down plug in the USB thumb drive with the Windows 7 installer
- Press your computer’s power button and mmediately press the F12 key enter the Boot Options menu
- Using the arrow keys select your USB thumb drive and press the Enter key
- At the Install Windows screen select your language, keyboard and click on the Next button
- At the lower left-hand part of the window click on Repair your computer
- Click the radion button next to Use recovery tools then click the Next button
- Click on the Command Prompt link
- With the Command Prompt open type diskpart and prest the Enter Key
Now you are in the Diskpart program where you can properly prepare the drive - Type list disk and press the Enter key
- From the list locate the drive that you wish to prepare, usually identified by its size and notate the drive number which typically is Disk 0
- Type select disk 0 and press the Enter key
- Type clean and press the Enter key
- Type create partition primary and press the Enter key
- Type select partition 1 and press the Enter key
- Type active and press the Enter key
- Type format fs=ntfs label=Win7BootDrv quick
- Type assign letter=C and press the Enter key
- Type exit and press the Enter key to exit the program
Copying Windows 7 Installer
- At the Command Prompt type xcopy d: c: /s /e /h
Make Internal Hard Drive Bootable
- Type bootsect /nt60 c: /mbr and press the Enter key
- Type exit to exit the Command Prompt
Boot From Internal Hard Drive
- Click on the Shut Down button
- Remove USB thumb drive
- Press the power button on your computer and it will boot from the internal hard drive and begin your Windows 7 installation
